Game Maps IRL vs Google Maps
27 August 2026 · 6 min read
Google Maps is the default for “will this shop still be open” and “which bus.” Game Maps IRL is the app you open when you want that same class of turn-by-turn wearing Los Santos, Blockworld, Saint Denis, or Night City. Keep both. The comparison is which job each one is built for, not a scoreboard.
Side by side
| Job | Google Maps | Game Maps IRL |
|---|---|---|
| Turn-by-turn | Yes, with live traffic and lots of modes | Yes, same class of routing, game skin |
| Visual style | Standard cartography, a few layers | Named game-inspired themes |
| Business directory | Reviews, hours, photos | Game POI blips, not a full directory |
| Transit / walking / cycling | First-class | Driving-first, themed map |
| CarPlay / Android Auto | Built in | After the in-car unlock |
| Price | Free with Google account features | Free download; themes + in-car via IAP |
What Google still wins
Live congestion, incident reports, and “avoid the closed ramp” are Google’s home turf. So is transit. So is a searchable index of millions of places with hours. Game Maps IRL labels a Fillmore parcel “Saloon” because that is the Saint Denis marker set, not because Yelp agrees. If you need the cafe that closes at 3, stay in Google.
Street View, parking difficulty, and multi-stop errands with a grocery list are also Google-shaped problems. Game Maps IRL does not try to be a local-search product.
What Game Maps IRL is for
Original visual themes on real GPS. Switch them with layers without dropping the route. CarPlay and Android Auto after unlock. POI bubbles that speak game: Crafting Spot in Paris, Gunsmith on Geary, Arcade in Manhattan. That is the product. It is unofficial. It is not affiliated with Google or with any game publisher.
Follow painted road signs over any app. For the Apple Maps version of this split, read vs Apple Maps. For how the skin works, read game-style GPS navigation.
Same class of turn-by-turn, different job
Site copy on the theme guides already says Game Maps IRL uses the same class of routing as a standard maps app: real roads, voice, next-turn banner, ETA. That claim is about getting you to a pin, not about cloning Google’s congestion model, Lane Guidance extras, or the firehose of user-reported closures. Construction you can see out the windshield still wins. A neon arterial on Los Santos is still the street named on the sign.
A practical split for a weekday: open Google Maps before you leave to see if the 101 is a parking lot. If you already know the roads, switch to Game Maps IRL in the car for the skin. Layers lets you flip Blockworld to Night City at a light. CarPlay setup is in the themes hub. The app is unofficial original art. A similarly named listing exists under another publisher; download from the store badges on this page.
Frequently asked questions
Can Game Maps IRL replace Google Maps for every trip?
No. Keep Google Maps for live traffic jams, transit, and looking up a shop’s hours. Use Game Maps IRL when you want the commute drawn as Los Santos, Blockworld, Saint Denis, or Night City.
Does the GTA-style map change the route Google would give?
Themes change how roads are drawn, not the joke that you should still follow street signs. Game Maps IRL uses the same class of turn-by-turn as a standard maps app. It is unofficial art, not a Google clone.
